Civil War Journal Entry

March 20,1865

Dear diary,

Let me describe myself. I am Tom Smith , a white man soldier currently working for the confederates. I live in South Carolina. To end this war I have to Fight through war for our country sake. I feel that slavery need to continue. Without slavery how can we make a living? I am very uncertain of what will happen next. Today I trained with the troops. We march for hours and hours, I lost count of how many miles we walked. Our feet were so exhausted. After that, we started shooting glass bottles in the dirty wet sweaty weather. There were 5 lines separated lines. If we miss a shot, we have to run half a mile nonstop. Our army get to wash our brown, greenish uniform in the dirty water outside of our tents. We ate dinner at 10. It was mash beans and potato again! If we are in thirst , we drank plain water. At night we went to sleep at 12 waiting for further announcements.

Dear diary,
Today is the war and it’s quite bloody. I’ve got shot about two times on the leg. As other people of my opposing army aim and shoot at us, we brace ourselves for the impact. Along the way we spotted a bomb coming straight toward us. Half of my army has been either shot or dead in the war. I was lucky enough to survive. I see blood on my clothes, face, and hands. The war seemed like days or even years of nonstop shooting and bombing. Still wounded I try as hard as I can to live through the war and put an end to this. The other army has lost some of their soldiers, though I still have hope to end this bloody war. Few hours later, other soldiers of the enemy side are starting to lose gun powder and bombs. Our only choice is to fight with our swords and our hands until the last man is standing…..

Let me describe myself. I am John Smith and I am a white confederate soldier. I believe that African-Americans being slaves is the best thing that ever happened to them. That’s why the Confederacy has to beat the North. Being a man and fighting in this Civil War is very difficult. Especially only being 26. Today, we fought our first battle. It was exhilarating and yet, scary. We started the day with a small breakfast. Just bacon and some water. At about 4:30 in the morning, we opened fire at Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. We opened fire with about 50 cannon. That is how the Civil War began. The battle was nothing like I imagined. The North is stronger than I thought. There were cannon everywhere. I could see people running for their lives everywhere. Some where willing to fight and some weren’t. The air was so dirty that I could barely see. I fired my gun anytime I saw the color blue, but it was all worth it because we won!

Dear Diary,

Today I, Spencer Johnson fought in the civil war. I am a white man that is 26 years old .I left my lovely wife, Malinda. And my mother, Heather Johnson when I went to the war. They were very sad. Me and my wife, Malinda Johnson have 12 children. 9 boys and 3 girls. I asked my eldest son, Spencer Johnson Jr. to take care of the rest of the family while I was in the Civil war. Later my son joined the war. We listened to music, but it wasn’t music because it was instructions. They also used children as a valuable information source. They would have children walk by to see how many men they had and what kind of weapons they used.

These past 2 years have been difficult. The battles are really intense. I have never been seriously injured. Only shot in the arm. We were in the middle of a battle and there was fog everywhere. Out of nowhere I accidentally got shot by one of my own men, but I am fine now. It is really dangerous to be injured because we unfortunately do not have the right medicine to heal. The women are trying their best to help us all, but sometimes there are more people dying from diseases than from the battles. My life has changed tremendously. Now I am constantly worrying. Not only worrying about me, but also for everyone else. I have gotten really close with all the men in the army, and it is very sad when anyone dies. To forget about all the troubles, we sometimes sing songs and play games. One of my favorite songs is, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” We sang that song while getting ready to fight the battle. Today we fought a battle at Chancellorsville, Virginia. Confederate general Paxton was killed during the battle, and we will always remember him. All the fighting today was worth it because we won!

Let me describe myself. I am Claudio Barajas. I am a 29 year old white man from California. I support the confederacy side. Now that the war has begun, I believe that slavery is wrong. I think this could have been avoided if people didn’t keep slaves. Today I trained and had shooting practice. I wore my uniform and I ate beef. I had to sleep in a tent in the middle of no where. I carried a rifle with me.
